Vidak to AG: Where's the Opinion on Fantasy Sports Betting?

Tuesday, May 24, 2016

Sacramento – Senator Andy Vidak (R-Hanford) sent the following letter to California Attorney General Kamala Harris asking when her office will issue an opinion on the legality of “fantasy sports betting” under current state law:

May 23, 2016

The Honorable Kamala Harris
Attorney General of California
1300 I Street
Sacramento, CA  95814

Dear Attorney General Harris:

In November of last year a member of the Assembly asked your office to review the legality of “fantasy sports betting” websites under California law.

It is my understanding that several other state Attorneys General have already issued opinions on whether or not fantasy sports betting is or isn’t legal in their respective states.

As the Senate Governmental Organization Committee may soon be hearing legislation regarding fantasy sports betting regulation, your office’s opinion on current law would be helpful in consideration of the proposed legislation.

Please let me know the status of your office’s review of current law as it relates to the legality of fantasy sports betting and when Californians should expect to see an opinion from you on this matter.

Andy Vidak
